When a family member comes home after a stroke, the hospital part of the journey ends and the long recovery begins. Many families feel unsure what to do next. The good news is that the brain can keep relearning for months, and sometimes years, after a stroke. Recovery comes from small steps repeated every day.
1. Start rehabilitation early
Rehabilitation should begin as soon as the neurologist says the patient is medically stable, often within days. The first three to six months usually bring the fastest improvement, but people with older strokes can still improve with regular therapy. Do not wait for strength to “come back on its own”.
2. Practise a little, many times a day
Short sessions spread through the day work better than one long, tiring session. Your therapist will give simple exercises such as:
- Moving the weak hand and fingers, squeezing a soft ball
- Sit-to-stand practice from a firm chair
- Supported standing and weight shifting from one leg to the other
- Saying words and short sentences aloud, reading the newspaper together
Encourage the person to use the weak side for daily tasks instead of doing everything with the strong hand.
3. Make the home safe
- Remove loose mats and keep walkways clear
- Fix grab bars near the toilet and bathing area; use a stool while bathing
- Keep a night light on the way to the bathroom
- Choose footwear with a good grip, not loose slippers
4. Protect against another stroke
Take medicines for blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol exactly as prescribed, and do not stop them without the doctor’s advice. Stop smoking and alcohol, reduce salt, and keep a simple record of BP and sugar readings to show at every review.
5. Look after mood and the caregiver
Low mood, irritability and tiredness are common after a stroke. Talk about it openly and include the patient in family decisions. Caregivers also need rest. Share the work among family members where you can.
Warning signs: act immediately
If there is a new face droop, arm weakness, slurred speech, sudden severe headache or confusion, call 108 and go to the nearest emergency hospital straight away.
