When someone in the family drinks heavily or uses drugs, everyone at home feels it: arguments, money worries, broken promises and fear. Many families keep hoping things will change on their own. Recovery is far more likely when the whole family understands addiction and supports treatment together.
Addiction is a health condition
Repeated alcohol or drug use changes how the brain handles cravings and self-control. That is why “just stop” rarely works. Seeing addiction as a health problem, not a character flaw, makes it easier to talk about it and seek help.
Signs it is time to get help
- Drinking or using daily, or in larger amounts than before
- Shaking, sweating or restlessness in the morning or when not drinking
- Problems at work, borrowing money, hiding bottles or lying about use
- Failed attempts to stop, even after promising to
Starting the conversation
- Choose a calm moment when the person is sober
- Talk about specific incidents and how they made you feel, without shouting or labelling
- Offer a clear next step, such as meeting a doctor or counsellor together
- If they refuse, you can still meet a counsellor yourself to learn how to help
Why detox should be supervised
For heavy daily drinkers, stopping suddenly can cause dangerous withdrawal: tremors, confusion, hallucinations or fits. Detox should be done under medical supervision. In an emergency, call 108. For free mental health support any time, call Tele-MANAS on 14416.
Helping after treatment
- Remove alcohol from the house and avoid old drinking companions and places
- Keep a daily routine with work, meals, exercise and sleep at regular times
- Praise small wins; one slip is a reason to return to treatment, not to give up
- Attend family counselling sessions and follow-up visits
